THP to Enforce Seat Belt Usage this Memorial Day Weekend

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Highway Patrol is planning to step up efforts to enforce seat belt usage over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. State Troopers along with other state and local law enforcement agencies are participating in the national seat belt enforcement campaign, Click it or Ticket, May 21 through June 3.

The 2012 Memorial Day holiday period begins at midnight, Friday, May 25 and will end at 11:59 p.m., Monday, May 28. Nineteen people were killed on Tennessee roadways during the 2011 Memorial Day holiday weekend. That’s up from 13 fatalities in 2010.   Last year, alcohol was involved in six of the fatalities, and 50 percent of the vehicle occupants killed were not wearing seat belts. During the 78-hour holiday time period, two pedestrians and seven motorcyclists were killed.

“Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer holiday travel season. It’s the perfect time to remind all motorists to buckle up. Tennessee State Troopers will be working around the clock to enforce the seat belt law in an effort to ensure the safety of the motoring public,” Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons said.

As of May 22, 369 people have been killed on Tennessee roadways. That is 36 more vehicular fatalities than the 333 killed during this same time last year. Of the 290 vehicle occupant fatalities this year, more than 55 percent were not restrained.

THP also reports that 947 people were killed on state roadways in 2011. Of the 729 vehicle occupants killed, 51.9 percent were not wearing seat belts. Of those unrestrained vehicle occupants, 190 were killed during nighttime hours versus 160 during the daytime hours (28 had unknown time).

“More traffic-related fatalities can be prevented if motorists would simply wear their seat belt,” THP Colonel Tracy Trott said. “Wearing a seat belt will cost you nothing, but wearing one may just save your life. We can’t stress the importance of seat belt usage enough. Buckle up every time you get into a vehicle.”

When worn correctly, seat belts have been proven to reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent, and by 60 percent in pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans.

Colonel Trott also noted the number of alcohol-related fatalities from January 1 through May 22, 2012. In Tennessee, preliminary information indicates vehicular fatalities involving alcohol has increased 33 percent compared to this same time last year. Additionally, State troopers have made 1,941 DUI arrests through the first four months of the year. In 2011, the number of arrests made during that time was 1,359.

Drivers can expect to see plenty of State Troopers on the road, enforcing seat belt laws and looking for aggressive and impaired drivers. More than 70 checkpoints are scheduled throughout the long holiday

weekend in an effort to reduce fatalities and serious injury crashes in the state. A list of the times and locations of scheduled checkpoints is attached. A 2011 Memorial Holiday statistical report also accompanies this release.

During the 2009 Memorial Day holiday, the Department of Safety and Homeland Security launched its Traffic Fatality Victims’ Memorial, designed to give family members of those killed an opportunity to memorialize and remember their loved ones. For more information, please visit our website at http://www.tn.gov/safety/pubsafety/fatalitymemorial.html

In addition to Memorial Day checkpoints, the THP Nashville District has organized a multi-jurisdictional DUI Enforcement blitz on Friday, June 1, beginning at 9 p.m. on that night and ending at 2 a.m., Saturday, June 2. State Troopers along with the Metro Nashville Police Department and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department will hold a checkpoint on Murfreesboro Road near McGavock Pike. This will be the third checkpoint held in conjunction with the Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

NASHVILLE — Preliminary figures from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security show 13 people were killed in traffic crashes on Tennessee roadways during this year’s 96-hour Memorial Day holiday period.  This is a drop from the 19 fatalities that occurred during the 2011 Memorial Day holiday weekend and the same number of deaths as 2010.

The 2012 Memorial Day holiday period ran from midnight, Friday, May 25 through 11:59 p.m., Monday, May 28. During that time, there were 10 fatal crashes that resulted in 13 fatalities.  Six crashes were single vehicle wrecks, while four of them were multiple car crashes. Ten of the people killed were vehicle occupants and three were motorcyclists. Five of the ten (50 percent) vehicle occupants killed were not wearing safety restraints.

In 1973, 26 people were killed in traffic crashes in Tennessee during the 78-hour Memorial Day holiday period, the highest number of deaths on record.  The lowest number of deaths occurred when five people were killed in traffic crashes during the 2002 Memorial Day 78-hour period.

During this year’s Memorial Day enforcement period, the THP made 94 impaired driving arrests statewide. They also issued 1,139 seat belt and child restraint device citations, 1,500 speeding and 511 registration violations.

As of May 31, 2012, there have been 397 people killed on Tennessee roadways, 26 more fatalities compared to this same time last year. The last two months have shown a decrease in vehicular deaths compared to the same months in 2011, with 21 and 10 fewer fatalities in April and May, respectively.

“One traffic fatality is one too many,” THP Colonel Tracy Trott said. “However, the reduction in traffic-related deaths the last two months is an encouraging sign that our highway safety enforcement, along with our partnerships with local law enforcement agencies and highway safety advocates, is making a difference.”

The Tennessee Highway Patrol conducted driver license and sobriety checkpoints throughout the state during this past holiday weekend, and will continue its participation in the high visibility national Click It or Ticket campaign through June 3.

State Troopers will also team up with local law enforcement to conduct traffic safety enforcement campaigns on interstates and highways. The THP Nashville District has organized a multi-jurisdictional DUI Enforcement blitz on Friday, June 1, beginning at 9 p.m. on that night and ending at 2 a.m., Saturday, June 2.

The THP along with the Metro Nashville Police Department and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department will hold a checkpoint on Murfreesboro Road near McGavock Pike. This will be the third checkpoint held in conjunction with the Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

A preliminary 2012 Memorial Day holiday statistical report, which includes the locations of the fatal crashes, accompanies this release. Please note the official traffic fatality count may rise due to delays in reporting and classification of traffic fatalities.

The Tennessee Department of Safety’s (www.TN.Gov/safety) mission is to ensure the safety and general welfare of the public.  The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services. General areas of responsibility include law enforcement, safety education, motorist services and terrorism prevention.

Memorial Day Travel: Know Before You Go, Save Time and Money by
RALEIGH – During the Memorial Day weekend, N.C. Department of Transportation will suspend most road construction activities on major routes across the state to ensure that holiday travelers will have smoother trips. By avoiding traffic delays, motorists can reach their destinations safely and efficiently, while cutting down on fuel consumption and costs. NCDOT will put on hold most construction projects along interstate, N.C. and U.S. routes from 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, until midnight, Monday, May 30 with these exceptions: N.C. 42 will have a signed detour, road closure and bridge replacement east and west of Ahoskie Creek in Hertford County. N.C. 94 will have a road closure and bridge construction on Elementary School Road at U.S. 64 in Tyrrell County. U.S. 158 will have two-lane two-way traffic on the Pasquotank River Bridge in Pasquotank County. I-85 will have lane closures in both the northbound and southbound lanes traffic between the Virginia line and the town of Henderson. The pattern affects traffic in Vance and Granville counties. U.S. 23/74 will have a bridge replacement in Jackson County. N.C. 294 will have portable traffic signals in Cherokee County. Here are some additional tips for navigating the highways safely during the Memorial Day weekend: Leave early to get a head start on your drive. Travel at non-peak hours when possible. Stay alert. Even if work is suspended, you may encounter narrowed lanes and traffic shits in work zones. Be patient and obey the posted speed limit. Use alternative routes, when possible, to avoid traffic congestion. Stay informed. Real-time travel information is available online and over the phone by dialing 511. Don’t drive drowsy. Travel at times when you are normally awake, and take frequent breaks. Avoid distracted driving. When drivers stop focusing on the road ahead, they react more slowly to traffic conditions and are more likely to be involved in an accident. For real-time travel information at any time, visit the Traveler Services section of the NCDOT website or follow NCDOT on Twitter. In addition, the Memorial Day “Click It or Ticket” campaign begins  Thursday, May 26 and runs through Monday, May 30. Law enforcement officers are stepping up patrols statewide, watching for people who aren’t buckled up, so don’t forget: Buckle up. Every seat, Every time. While you are traveling this Memorial Day weekend, your job is to be a safe driver. Focus on the road and let everything else wait until you arrive at your destination. ***NCDOT***
